FROM LOOKOUT TOWERS TO WATERFALLS

The most beautiful excursion destinations in the Black Forest

Lush green forests, picturesque villages, vineyards in the Kaiserstuhl and the famous cuckoo clocks – the Black Forest is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Germany.

Take a hike to the highest mountains and deepest lakes, to the steepest waterfalls and to the most beautiful towns in the Black Forest – we show you our highlights in Baden’s natural paradise.

1. TRIBERG WATERFALLS

Experience Germany's highest waterfalls

Triberger Wasserfall

With a drop height of 163 meters, the Triberg waterfalls are one of the highest and most impressive natural wonders in Germany. The water of the Gutach plunges over seven steps into the depths – accompanied by hiking trails, viewpoints and informative boards.

A visit in the evening is particularly impressive, when the waterfalls are artfully illuminated until 10 pm. Along the paths, you will not only encounter the mighty nature – but also trusting squirrels, which particularly delight young visitors.

2. THE FELDBERG

Hiking & skiing on the highest mountain in the Black Forest

The Feldberg in the southern Black Forest is not only the highest point in Baden-Württemberg, but also a popular excursion destination at any time of year. In summer, hikers discover the diversity of the landscape on well-signposted routes such as the Panorama Trail or the Feldberg Lakes Circuit – from dark fir forests to clear mountain lakes. In winter, the Feldberg is transformed into the largest ski area in the region with lifts, cross-country ski trails and winter hiking trails.

A special experience is the ride on the Feldbergbahn to the mountain station at 1,450 meters. From there, it is only a few steps to the viewing tower, which offers a fantastic panoramic view – an unforgettable moment, especially at sunset.

3. THE TITI LAKE

The most beautiful bathing lake in the Black Forest

Crystal-clear water, densely wooded shores and a view of the mountains – the royal blue Titisee is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the Black Forest. Particularly popular as a bathing lake, it is a wonderful place to cool off in summer. But hikes around the lake, sailing and boat tours across the water and the beautiful lakeside promenade with cafés, stores and souvenir stores also promise an exciting trip to Titisee-Neustadt.

4. FREIBURG

Old town worth seeing with good views

Freiburg im Breisgau – the southernmost and sunniest city in Germany is a highlight in the Black Forest with its charming old town, historical sights and cultural attractions. Stroll through the little alleyways of the old town, always along the famous Bächle and linger on the beautiful Münsterplatz. The cathedral market is a paradise for gourmets, but the restaurants and cafés are also worth a visit.

Don’t miss the view from the Schlossberg: just a few minutes’ walk from the city center, it rewards visitors with a sweeping view over the rooftops of the city – particularly atmospheric at sunset. The university town in Baden offers a young atmosphere with a varied cultural offering, beautiful boutiques and wine taverns – the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl are just around the corner.

5. FOR THE SENSES

Experience Black Forest tradition up close

How did Black Forest farmers live more than 400 years ago? You will find the answer at the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum in Gutach – six fully furnished farmhouses from the 16th to 18th centuries await you on an area of over five hectares, supplemented by outbuildings such as a bakehouse, sawmill and kiln house.

The regular craft demonstrations are a particular highlight: Whether it’s straw weaving, broom making or cooking in the open fireplace – here you can experience traditional skills up close. For children, there is a natural adventure playground and interactive workshops where they can get creative themselves. Surrounded by orchards, animal enclosures and old domestic animal breeds, the excursion is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
